Mom's birthday coming up ...lets make her something nice

Treble Clef Pendant and Earring Set

So my Mom's birthdays coming up so I thought why not make her something nice. Her first...probably of many...jewellery pieces from me for her present.

...After a day of lots of work with a piercing saw and filing they were finally ready to have jump rings attached before being cleaned up again.

Add some earring hooks...

...and add a box for the finishing touch =)

Happy Birthday Mom

...but no present is complete without a handmade card as well...

...Yep that's right more treble clefs and music theme...have you worked out she's a music teacher yet =)

Yes I do work with these ;)

Lil' Treat For Me

...yes I usually do my own but I thought I'd treat myself to these little lovelys =)
glittery neon pink you can't go wrong

...and yes I do work in these too =)

Learning From My Space - Inspiration Station

Inspiration Station
50 Words 50 Photographs

Now...finding 50 photographs alone was hard enough...I had over 180 that I chose to begin with which got narrowed down to my space above. All the imagery used, bar images of artists work, is all my own photography.
Getting feedback from others on my space and giving it to others also helped us all to realize  and pick out running themes within our chosen imagery.
Mine was coming back with suggestive, sexual, curves, floral link, female connotations etc...
I eventually narrowed down the photographs and words to this.

...My gorgeous ladies picked up in Amsterdam...

...Now to find some inspiration...

SEMESTER 2

After a lovely break for Christmas and new year shinanigans it's back to it!
Semester 2!
=)

Semester One - Final Piece - Olive Strainers

Utensils brief
Olive Strainers

These were made in response to the utensils brief. Really wanted to avoid making spoons as this seemed to be a popular choice for many. Once I'd got my head around making something to solve a problem I was off and came up with these olive strainers. A spike through a spiral dish to skewer the olive, enable you to drain off the liquid, and release the olive by opening the tongs. All done without having to handle them.

This is were I jumped onto the blacksmithing techniques bandwagon with starting stock jargon...hell loads of maths...and tapered ends =)

I made a long set to cater for long skinny olive jars and a shorter pair for smaller jars and serving purposes.

Day 2 with Bron - Metal Boxes

Metal Box

Another day with Bron =)
Creating a box from a continuous strip for the side panels. This is then soldered to the base. A lid and hinge can then be applied. I decorated my lid with stamped letters and a copper swirl. The door is held shut with a small loop that catches the inside.

Etching - Pendant

Etched Heart Pendant

A day with Bron. Learning her techniques to make etched, press formed pendants.
I began by choosing my design to etch onto the gilding metal. This is printed onto acetate and applied to the metal which is then left in the acid for the area to be eaten away.

I cut out a heart shaped mold from acrylic....yes I picked something simple...

The metal is annealed and pressed through the mold using a fly press and rubber back fitting the mold shape.

I was then left with the two separate halves of my pendant, which I then carefully cut out using a piercing saw. Another process I love doing very precisely.

The two haves are then sanded to create an evenly flat surface which are then ready to be soldered together. Once joined the edges can be cleaned up and a jump ring applied leaving you with the end result.

Etched Pendant

Plastic Samples

Plastics with Greg
A day of exploring plastics and its possibilities. ...yes I did try to body cast a larger sheet which was very entertaining for my fellow jewellers.
" I don't want you sticking it to yourself..."
Greg leaves room....
wooo more body casting
Again my end samples seemed to move towards the idea of fascinators....maybe I show look into this area more :)

Acrylic ring with pop rivets

Going floral. Originally circles joined with pop rivets. These were then heated with a hot air gun till they started to shrivel. These were then glued to a ring base.

Metal Samples

Metal Samples
These are a selection of my metal samples. This was just about exploring different ways of creating textures, shapes, and joins.
Having a play with metals.

Dish Plaques

Cutting copper circles, doming and joining on different angles. These could be taken forward as wearable pendants :) .....oooo the possibilities are endless

Dish Plaque

This shows off the angle of the copper dishes joined to the brass.

Brass Waves

Purely made from cutting in a guillotine. Letting the metal move where it wants to.

Brass Curl

Brass Feather Effect

Further exploring the movement of metal. Repetition of cutting fine lines creating a feather like outcome. Also looks like a cuff that could be worn on the ear.

Hinge

My first tiny hinge! Me and my fellow jeweler Rose Grant decided to take on the challenge on making a hinge. It may of taken us nearly all day but we did it! ...and they were awesome! right in my element making complicated, fiddly things :)

Semester one - New Beginings On My Pathway To Jewellery Design -

Finally moving on to what I hope to be bigger and better things. Jewellery Design at Hereford College of Arts. Bring it on x

Art Foundation - Final Pieces -

Final Pieces

These are my final pieces for Art Foundation. I created a range of fascinators, body pin and ring in response to structures of natural forms.

Physalis Fruit

Iron binding wire cases around a raku bead hung on a brazing rod pin. I spent rather a long time forming patches of circles to slide into the wire frames...but I loved doing it.

Conker Exterior

Glass spikes on a brazing wire grid. The glass spikes were made using a process called "Cotteling" where wax replicas are places inside a tube which is wrapped up with string. These molds are then filled with plaster. Once set the wax can be melted out and the mold filled with glass powder. These are fired and then broken away to reveal very fragile glass spikes.
...you wouldn't even begin to imagine the challenges I came across with this one =)

Lacy Stinkhorn Fungus

Did many experiments to try replicate the textural qualities of this fungus. It already held qualities to make it look like a hat with this mesh form all the way around the bottom. I tried variations in resin, porcelain, latex and crochet before settling on a fine wire base foundation with a latex coating.

Pea Bean Pods

Initially starting as tamarind pods I developed the idea to be pea beans. These were made by layering a variety of toned veneers which could then be sanded back to create a pod form. The centers were then hollowed to hold domed open peas made from aluminium.

Conker Exterior Surface

A perspex disk which I pressed into a panel of wood drilled with various size holes. This created a raised surface texture which became contrasted to the original clear perspex that was given a frosted glass texture when press against the wood.

Cautious Ring

This ring was initially from the reflection of self brief, however, it felt fitting to be placed with my final show as I was looking into natural structure and many of the forms I used held reoccurring shapes and a sense of tessellation.

Art foundation continued - Responding To Shapes -

Reflection of self

For this brief I had to choose 6 words that reflected myself. Mine were: Creative, Emotional, Systematical, Lively, Passionate and Cautious. I then used shapes and colour themes that reflected the words. I was then able to develop the designs into 3D objects. I created a clasp to fold material through, a locket and a ring which later became a part of my final show.

Systematical Clasp
Made from perspex, with mirrored perspex strips and a central brass foil square.

Mahogany Locket

This is made up from 8 circular disks on each halve to create a hollowed centre, decorated with gold leaf, after adding a light stain to the wood to further highlight the colouration. The small magnets allow the object to be held shut at the same time as creating a subtle clasp.

Cautious Ring

A combination of copper, brass and silver hexagons and octagons on a  double silver ring base. This piece has definitely made it onto my list of most complex items to make as soldering the materials together proved very challenging.

Art Foundation - moving on to bigger things-

Physalis Fruit

Got back in touch with sketching, even if i did get carried away spending 3 hours painstakingly drawing all the little textures on the outer shell. I later used in response to my final project brief. I was initially looking into natural forms and how they were structured. I would then take these forms forward to deconstruct to make in different materials.

A Level Part 2 - Interchangeable Pendant Set

My Pendant Set
Art Nouveau Pendant
Silver dish and leaf with a vinyl cut design drawn out on CAD, example of how I enjoy complex designs, with a leaf highlighted with an tiny African amethyst stone.

Bauhaus Pendant
Silver base with silver wire boarder to hold black enamel with a round carnelian cabochon.

Art Deco Pendant
Copper Base dish with silver strips and stone sets. Enameling process and Chinese Amazonite set cabochons.

These are my pieces from A Level. I chose to design a necklace that could have inter-changeable pendants based on 3 design movements: Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, and Art Deco. I came across many challenges and learnt many new skills such as ways of enamelling, acid etching and vinyl cutting to apply the design.
